The United States Supreme Court’s ruling in the South Dakota v. Wayfair case highlights the shifting of our economy to the digital landscape. It will have a lasting impact on how states tax interstate sales. As a result of this ruling, a state can now require retailers to collect sales taxes even if they don’t have a physical presence within its borders. The ruling could even the playing field between online retailers and brick-and-mortar stores when it comes to charging customers sales tax. Only time will tell.
